How Getting a College Degree is a Business Decision | FinCalC

The other day when I was at my native place, I met one of my uncles who never went to College. He owns a million dollar business, without actually going to College.

Sounds unusual? I worked my ass off for 4 straight years to get my College Degree, with student loan debt at the end of college and with no job guarantee to pay my student loan debt.

And here we have another person, with no college degree, no student loan debt and with a million dollar business. How is that even possible? How can we have a continuous flow of Income without having a College degree? Is College degree not that important to make for a living?

Lessons learnt from my uncle who never went to College

I interacted with my Uncle right away. I found no difference between the person who went to college and my uncle during our entire conversation.

On the contrary, he was more passionate about new business ideas, more conscious about Personal Finance related topics and how to manage Money. He knew how money works and how to let Money work for him.

He said..
"If you don't know how to let Money work for you, you will work for Money throughout your entire life."

Going to college doesn't teach you how Money can work for you. They don't have any subject about Personal Finance and Money Management (except few courses). They have their traditional way of assessing students based on their understanding of a particular subject, which is not applicable in our life most of the times.

According to him..
"Going to College nowadays is a Business decision. You are going to jump in one of the wells, you are not sure about whether it's worth it. Whether you will be able to come out of it."

Many people get their college degrees, get a job, work for few years and finally realize that they hate it. Most of them hate their job. They hate following the same routine, same process, everyday, and they just feel like quitting their job.

They just drag their life doing the job they hate to make for a living and sustain their families. They don't quit because they have no other option. So, was getting a College degree worth it?

Getting a College Degree is important to get a job

Employers of big companies filter candidates based on your resume. If you don't have a College Degree in your resume, you are not fit to work in their organization straightaway.

"College Degree is a guarantee from your institution that you are ready to work in a corporate environment. It does not guarantee a continuous flow of Income."

There are many people who get their College Degrees, get a job, hate the work they do, quit their job after few years and start their own business. College Degree isn't worth it if that is the case.

He is not saying College Degree isn't worth it at all. You should go to college if you feel like going and accept the fact that you want to work for someone else after getting a Degree. But, you can make for a living without a College Degree too.

Though you have a less chance of working for some big companies out there, but nothing can stop you from exploring if you don't have a Degree.

"A guy who has been coding from childhood, without a Degree will have good knowledge and required skills compared to another guy who has a Degree with 4 years of College level coding experience."

Going for a College Degree is a business decision. You put your hard earned money to gain required skills and knowledge, just to be interviewed and get placed in big companies.

You are working for someone else in the end. You don't have the freedom to work on your own terms. You follow someone else's rules.

If you don't have a Degree, you will find ways to make for a living. You will work on your own terms. It is not going to be that easy, but you will learn while working on your goals.

So, these were some thoughts shared by my uncle during our conversation. He isn't against the fact that College Degree is important, but his thought process made him a successful man. In the end, it depends on you whether you want to get a College Degree or not. After all, it's a Business decision.

It's up to you whether you want to get a Degree and play it safe or work on your hustles while others are going to College after High School.

Conclusion:

1. Getting a College Degree is a Business decision
2. You invest your hard earned money or take a student loan to get a College Degree
3. College Degree is just an indication that you are fit to work with other people in an organization
4. College Degree does not guarantee continuous flow of Income
5. You can still make a living without a College Degree
6. College Degree makes it easy for you to get a job
7. Most of the knowledge you gain while getting a College Degree isn't applicable practically at industry level
8. Some of them having Degrees work in different domains. Others are either happy with their work or just drag their life in the same job.
9. You are in good financial position if you don't have a student Debt and College Degree compared to having student Debt with a Degree, but the path for people having College Degree is going to be easy compared to people not having a Degree.
